Shopping car and home insurance at renewal
Insurance premiums can rise at renewal even when nothing about you has changed. Comparing quotes a few weeks before renewal gives you time to switch without a gap in coverage.
Step by step
- Find your renewal date and current coverage
Your declarations page lists coverage limits and deductibles. You'll need it to compare like with like.
- Get quotes three to four weeks ahead
That leaves time to compare and switch before the renewal date.
- Compare the same coverage
A cheaper quote with lower limits or a higher deductible is not the same product.
- Ask about discounts
Bundling, safe driving, security devices and paying in full can reduce premiums.
- Avoid a gap
Start the new policy before the old one ends, then cancel the old one in writing.
Good to know: Never drop coverage you're required to have, such as car insurance or insurance your mortgage lender requires, before the new policy is active.
