Free trials without the surprise charge

A free trial that needs your card is designed to roll into a paid plan. That's fine if you want the service, and expensive if you forget.

Step by step

  1. Note the exact end date

Look for the date the first charge happens, not just "7 days free". Write it down the moment you sign up.

  2. Set a reminder a few days early

Give yourself time to decide. Two or three days before the end is a good default.

  3. Check the price after the trial

Introductory prices often jump after the first period. Know the regular price before you decide.

  4. Cancel straight away if you're unsure

Many services let you keep using the trial after cancelling until it ends.

Good to know: Using a virtual card number with a spending limit, if your bank offers one, adds a second layer of protection.
