How to cancel a subscription

Most subscriptions are easy to start and easy to forget. Cancelling is usually simple once you know where to look, and a few habits make sure you're not charged again.

Step by step

  1. Find where you signed up

Subscriptions bought through an app store are cancelled in that store's subscription settings, not in the app. Others are cancelled in your account settings on the company's website.

  2. Cancel before the renewal date

Most services keep access until the end of the paid period, so cancelling early usually loses nothing. Check the renewal date first.

  3. Save proof

Screenshot the cancellation confirmation or keep the confirmation email, with the date.

  4. Watch the next statement

Check that no new charge appears after the renewal date. If one does, contact the company with your proof.

  5. Dispute if needed

If a company keeps charging after you cancelled, contact your card issuer about disputing the charge.

Good to know: Some states, including California, require businesses that let you sign up online to also let you cancel online.
