Money tips

Lowering utility bills

Utility bills are hard to negotiate, but easy to shrink with small changes and programs most people don't know about.

Step by step

  1. Look for programs from your utility

Many utilities offer free energy audits, rebates on efficient appliances, and budget billing that evens out seasonal spikes.

  2. Seal the obvious leaks

Weatherstripping, door sweeps and LED bulbs are inexpensive and pay back quickly.

  3. Adjust the thermostat

A programmable or smart thermostat can lower heating and cooling costs when nobody is home.

  4. Check for assistance

If bills are hard to pay, ask your utility about payment plans and look into the federal LIHEAP program through your state.

Good to know: Paying utility bills on time avoids late fees. A reminder a few days before the due date helps if you don't use autopay.
