Money tips

Avoiding late fees

Late fees are money for nothing, and late payments on credit accounts can hurt your credit. A simple system prevents most of them.

Step by step

  1. List every due date

Rent, utilities, phone, cards, loans and insurance.

  2. Use autopay for at least the minimum

On credit cards and loans, autopaying the minimum protects you even if you forget, and you can still pay more.

  3. Line up due dates with payday

Many companies let you change your due date. Ask.

  4. If you pay late, ask for a waiver

If it's a first late payment, many companies will waive the fee if you call and ask politely.

Good to know: Set reminders a few days before due dates for bills that aren't on autopay.
